Barton-on-Sea established its first golf course in 1897, (the
same year in which the R & A rules for golf were internationally accepted).
At that time there were few golf courses in the British Isles, so this would
be a great attraction. It was a nine hole course and extended along the cliff
top east of Barton Court Hotel, but three of the holes have slipped over the
edge due to erosion, so the next course went inland and was finished by 1910. It
was followed by another built in 1932, but that too suffered from erosion, so
the fourth course had to be built well back from the coast, with an
entrance in Milford Road. The New Club House has magnificent views over the
Solent to the Isle of Wight.
After the 1932 Clubhouse was demolished, a superior new block of flats was built overlooking the Green, called Greenside Court.
