REDEVELOPMENT
The
Village School was built in 1835 on island site but demolished in 1930, and
re-opened in Gore Road. The Beehive Cottage and Witt`s boot store stood on the land now
converted to a small public garden.
Between the "George Inn" and
the "Wheatsheaf" the Smithy used to stand but now it has become a
Chinese take-away and a fried fish shop. On the other side of the
"George" there was a slaughter house and butcher's cob shop (a cob
building is made of unbaked clay). This lasted from1860 until it was demolished
in 1989 to be replaced by an office block called "Jordan House" after
the last man to be the butcher. The
field behind the "George" was used as a
fairground but now has mobile homes. Children from
the Poor House, built in 1790, were
employed in making tiny chains for the inside of watches, called fusee chains. The
Poor House has been replaced by the Adult Education Centre called "Fusee
House".
Since 2000, the "The George" public house has been renamed "The George Centre", part has become a solicitors and investment offices.
